Another step towards a more sustainable Siargao

Good news for the environment of Siargao. In the past month of October, we have seen the opening of three new refilling and package-free shops in General Luna, paving the way for not only a greener, but also a cheaper way to buy and consume critical goods, for both local residents and visitors.

The single-use plastic ban in General Luna, inspired by the one in the municipality of Pilar, has officially been implemented since the 1st January 2019. This was the first decisive step towards the limitation of the consumption of unnecessary waste. Nonetheless, we are still far from winning the battle against the trash, which is piling up beneath our eyes. Sadly, most of the plastic and wrappers that end up littering Earth’s nature are mass produced by global companies such as Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Mondelez, P&G, Unilever or Colgate-Palmolive, as reported by Greenpeace.

In the Philippines, there is a deeply rooted habit regarding daily consumption of single-use products, which can be explained by the financial situation of many families around the country, but also by the lack of alternatives. The average Filipino is statistically likely to use on average 591 sachets, 174 shopping bags, and 163 plastic labo bags every year, according to a study by the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) from this year.

It should be our main priority to break the habit of buying everyday single-use sachets. At the moment it is quite common to use one sachet for the soap, one for the shampoo, one for the shaving cream and one for the 3 in 1 coffee plus countless others, which quickly adds up.

The solution?

Returning to the old ways and shopping how our grandparents used to shop… in bulk.

We talked to four entrepreneurs who have recently opened the first ever refilling shops in Siargao. “Social media is full of environmental awareness, but not many people are actually doing something about it, so I decided to make a change. I wanted to help the locals and the environment, hence “Reefeel” was born”, explains Jonathan “Joe” Belagot, owner of the new “Reefeel” station in Purok 5 in front of Salty Nomads Hostel. With his products, Joe targets mainly sari-sari stores and would like them all to become refilling stations by using his cleaning and personal care products as a cheaper alternative for locals.

Tala Tuparan and Marnelli Rubinos, the eco-warrior women behind ‘Paraiso Siargao’, the new shop located next to Buddha Resort, share the same vision as Joe. These two entrepreneurs are now selling plant-based and plastic-free products by refill - from cleaning and hygiene products to a variety of personal care products such as sunscreen. Their aim is to make it as easy as possible for businesses to switch to a more sustainable way of consuming. “We are really trying to address the barriers that hinder people from going green. The first barrier is affordability, accessibility is the second and habit the third” expresses Tala. Just as Joe has, Paraiso Siargao have set incredibly affordable prices with every 10ml costing as little as 3-6 pesos. “More than just a business, Paraiso is an advocacy.”, concludes the owner.

“We are really trying to address the barriers that hinder people from going green", expresses Tala from Paraiso Siargao.

Last but not least, the “Eco-Libri Market, Siargao Zero Waste” shop, situated in Kalipay Resort, is also offering the same value eco-friendly cleaning and personal care product refills, but this shop differentiates itself by offering a wide variety of dried foods in bulk such as nuts, pasta and herbs. Moreover, the owner showed us several eco-friendly alternatives to everyday polluting products that they offer such as the menstrual cup, to use instead of tampons, or the raw Alum Stone (called Tawas in the Philippines), a package-free natural deodorant.

It is not a myth that buying in bulk or by weight, with your own container, and joining the refilling lifestyle is not only more sustainable but also smarter, as it is a cheaper way to consume.

We commend these three shops for setting an example for our community and the country to follow, while working together to make a greener Siargao. We wish that Siargaonon and visitors alike will fully support these game-changing initiatives.

An una na babag amo an kamahal, an makab-ot an ika duha sanan batasan an ika tuyo” hisgot ni Tala.
